by pedalmag.com

June 14, 2011 (Lachine, QC) – Former Mardis champ, Martin Gilbert (SpiderTech p/b C10), topped the podium at round two of the 34th annual series this evening in Lachine, besting Simon Pierre-Gauthier (Espoirs Quilicot) in second and Jean-François Laroche (Fantino Mondello Regis) in third. David Veilleux (Europcar) claimed 4th and Eric Lyman (Team Spirit GTH Cannondale) was 5th.

Gilbert’s teammate Keven Lacombe led a 3-man break with Gilbert and Pierre-Gauthier in tow at the 3/4 mark in the race which featured mild temperatures and average crowds. Earlier threats of rain did not materialize. Soon after the break there was a crash which took down 7-8 riders including SpiderTech’s Guillaume Boivin. Luckily there were no injuries and all rejoined the race.

Meanwhile the break maintained its 12-15s lead for the rest of the race as Lacombe faded, his work done for Gilbert who scooped the sprint victory over the young 18-year-old Pierre-Gauthier. Laroche won the bunch sprint for the final spot on the podium.
