February 04, 2014 (Portland, OR / Montreal, QC) – Alta Bicycle Share (ABS), the leader in North American bicycle share system design and operations, and Canada’s 8D Technologies (“8D”), a world leader in the development of unique green urban transportation management and payment solutions, and the original technology provider for the Public Bicycle System Company (PBSC, also known as ‘BIXI’), announced today that they will be working together to launch and operate the next generation of bike share in 2014.

Named “BSSv4,” the next generation of the 8D system has been in development for a few years, and builds upon the award winning “BSSv3” platform developed by 8D and currently deployed successfully in bike share systems in cities such as Washington D.C. / Arlington, Boston, Minneapolis, Melbourne (AUS), London (UK), Toronto, Ottawa, and Montreal (CAN).

“This alliance will provide our new clients with excellent solutions for their systems,” stated Mia Birk, Vice President of Alta. “We are charting a new course with a fully integrated supply chain to support our world-class operations.”

“We are very excited about this partnership with Alta, and the perspective of contributing in a positive way to the bike share industry. We are truly committed to designing, developing, delivering and supporting the best possible bike share solutions that answer the needs of cities now, and moving forward,” says Isabelle Bettez, President and CEO of 8D Technologies.

The new system has a sleek design, merges the electronics boards and screens, and has an improved docking mechanism linking the bikes to the stations.  Other BSSv4 system enhancements include:
• Key distribution from the kiosk
• Account management and bike reservations through a new mobile application
• Color screens
• Enhanced power management solutions
• Improved docking/undocking mechanism

Alta and 8D currently offer bike share solutions and services to cities on three continents. Their priority is to continue to serve both their existing and new clients, with the goal of expanding existing systems and launching new systems in the summer of 2014.
