Isabelle Dube Killed by Grizzly in Canmore

June 6, 2005 (Canmore, AB) — As reported in the Calgary Herald police have identified that Isabelle Dube was killed by a grizzly bear on a popular hiking trail near Canmore, west of Calgary.

Dube, a competitive mountain biker and who placed third overall with teammate Maria Hawkins at the grueling 2004 TransRockies Challenge, was out jogging with two friends yesterday when they were attacked.

Dube’s friends were not harmed and were able to escape and ran for help to a nearby golf course but it was too late.

Ron Casey, Canmore’s mayor, called it “a sad day'” adding that the attack will intensify debate around development in Canmore.
Environmentalists have lobbied hard for wildlife corridors on the outskirts of the community where resort golf courses and million-dollar mountain chalets have been built.

The grizzly was shot and killed later by fish and wildlife officers. Dube was in her mid-30s, married and had a young daughter.
