Johnson and Bessette Claim Season-Long U.S. Cyclocross Honors

provided by US Cycling

December 20, 2006 (Colorado Springs, Colo.) -The husband and wife team of Tim Johnson (Middleton, Mass./Cyclocrossworld.com) and Canadian Lyne Bessette (Cyclocrossworld.com) ended the domestic cyclo-cross season atop the overall standings of the USA Cycling Cyclo-cross National Racing Calendar.

The 30-race calendar, which consisted of all 29 UCI-sanctioned races in the United States and the USA Cycling Cyclo-cross National Championships, kicked off in late September and concluded with last weekend's national championships in Providence, R.I.

Johnson accumulated 790 points to win the elite men's division, while Bessette collected 260 points to take the elite women's overall title.

Recently crowned national champions Ryan Trebon (Ventura, Calif./Kona) and Katie Compton (Colorado Springs, Colo./Spike) each finished second in their respective categories. Trebon notched 610 points, while Compton's 248 points made for a close race with Bessette.

Key wins for Johnson included a pair of victories in the Downeast Cyclo-cross weekend, the Bay State Cyclo-cross event, and the final round of the Crank Brothers U.S. Gran Prix of Cyclo-cross in Portland, Ore. His point total was further complimented by four second-place efforts in additional USGP events.

Like Johnson, Bessette also scored one win on the USGP circuit - a victory in the first event in Gloucester, Mass. - and notched four second-place finishes. She also shared wins in both Downeast Cyclo-cross events and the Bay State race.
