Alex Wrubleski Report - Off Season and Back on Again

by Alex Wrubleski

November 29, 2007 (Victoria, B.C.) - After the 2007 Road World Championships in Stuttgart Germany on September 27th I flew back home to Regina, Saskatchewan and took a full month off the bike. I literally didn't unpack my bike until November 7th. It had been a long season - nine months of racing which started in February.

After my last race in Charlotte, North Carolina with my team Colavita/Sutter Home in July, I was ready to hang up my bike for the year. In my mind I was done. I was tired and had a fairly frustrating season, on and off the bike. At first I didn't know if I was going to be selected to Canada's Road Worlds team, and to be honest, at that point I didn't really care. I just wanted the season to be over.

So I took some time off the bike, but soon found out that I was going to France for the Tour de Ardeche, and to Germany for the Road Worlds. I knew this would be my last shot of the season to get some results, help get some points for Canada, and to prove to myself that I could do it.

After 4-5 weeks of training in Regina and Victoria, B.C. I was off to France! It was a great experience, and the season ended on a really positive note. I even brought home some new scars from the road race at the Road Worlds to remember it by!

Now I am in Victoria, B.C. and am planning to do my winter training here. I decided that I wanted a vehicle this winter, so I made the 22-hour drive from Regina and did it over four days, making a few stops along the way to visit some friends!

The first week back on the bike after a long break was a real shock to the body but I went full on back into it! I've been here over two weeks now and loving it. I'm training at the Pacific Sport National Training Centre where I get all of the support that I need. I have a great training and living environment with lots of people to train with, and lots of amazing roads to ride, although right now it's mostly just me and my team mate Erinne Willock that show up. I really only have three months until our first race in Australia.

Our 2008 race schedule isn't complete yet but it looks like we will be doing a lot of the UCI circuit in the spring to gather points for the Olympics. So I will be spending a fair amount of time in Europe with my team and with the CCA's program. (Wrubleski is rumoured to be leaving Colavita/Sutter Home for another team not yet disclosed)

It's scary when you realize how soon it all starts again, but it's also really exciting!!
