Green Mountain Stage Race Stage 1 – Fortin and Palmer-Komar 1-2

by pedalmag.com

September 03, 2011 (Waitsfield, Vermont) – Reigning Canadian road champ, Véronique Fortin (Rocky Mountain-Desjardins Valeurs Mobilieres), won the opening 9.654km Stage 1 Warren Store ITT as the 4-stage Green Mountain Stage Race got underway on Saturday in Waitsfield, Vermont. Fellow Canuck, Susan Palmer-Komar (P-K Express/HNZ Strategic.com), finished second with Kacy Wander (Ind) in third.

Brett Tivers (Garneau-Club Chaussures-Norton Rose) won the men’s race over Tom Zirbel (Jamis/Sutter Home)  in second with Anders Newbury (Chipotle Development Team) in third. Jordan Cheyne (HandRBlock) was the top Canadian in 11th.

Despite the affects of Hurricane Irene that ravaged the East, race director, Gary Kessler, and his team, along with the local community, were able to re-group and make some last minute modifications to allow the popular GMSR event, which runs from Sept. 2-4, to continue this year.
