Giro D’Italia

June 1, 2002 (Monticello Brianza ITALY): Tyler Hamilton came short of
becoming only the 2nd American to ever win the Tour Of Italy today (Andy
Hampsten won in 1987) as he could not overtake the 29-old Paolo Savoldelli.

Hamilton, who won the first time trial, was largely expected to win this
final TT. The question was just how much he would win by.

As it turned out, the CSC-Tiscali rider placed 4th to Aitor Gonzalez Jimenez , with
Savoldelli placing 3rd. The Giro concludes tomorrow, on a largely
ceremonial stage, with no changes to the G.C. expected. However, watch for
Mario Cipollini, who might try to win the final stage in style!

Giro D’Italia

As quickly as Cadel Evans, the mountain-bike-turned-road Superstar put on
the pink jersey, he has also lost it.

Although today’s tough stage 17 was
222 km long, it was the final mountain passes that made the differences.
Hamilton conceded 4 minutes to the winner of the stage, Pavel Tonkov, but
is still only 1 minute and a half behind the new pink jersey: Paolo
Savodelli. Evans, who has ridden consistently throughout his first Grand
Tour, couldn’t keep the dream alive of an overall victory. He lost 17
minutes.
