May 21, 2016 (Corvara, ITA) – Esteban Chaves (Col) Orica-GreenEdge stole the thunder at the Giro’s Queen Stage 14 from Alpago to Corvara, 210 km, emerging as the victor in the final 4-up sprint to the line. Steven Kruijswijk (Ned) Team LottoNl-Jumbo grabbed second and takes over the fabled maglia rosa with Georg Preidler (Aut) Team Giant-Alpecin settling for third.

Darwin Atapuma (Col) BMC Racing Team who was caught by the three chasers could not contend and finished 4th despite a gallant effort for the win. Vincenzo Nibali (Ita) Astana Pro Team in 6th moved into second overall at 41s. Not able to respond was Alejandro Valverde (Esp) Movistar Team who sits 4th overall at 3:06 down behind Chaves in 3rd.

Canada’s Ryder Hesjedal (Trek-Segafredo) abandoned the race he won in 2012 due to sickness. “Definitely not how I envisioned it, but it’s how it goes,” said an extremely disappointed Hesjedal in a team release. “It has already been since Monday that I wasn’t feeling very good, but every day I have been trying to get through it, and I had seemed to be getting through, so I kept pushing. But today the body was not responding and I felt pretty bad all over.

“It’s unfortunate. I definitely don’t want to leave the Giro like this, but sometimes it’s out of your control. You can’t just make things happen if it’s not possible. I’d say it’s a cyclist’s speciality is suffering and pushing beyond what is capable most times.

“I think it will take a while for this to sink in, and I am sure I will reflect more later,” Hesjedal continued. “I will try and not get too upset, but it is not easy. It’s how it goes – I will have to deal with it.  Life goes on.” – read more here.
