Giro 2005 — Stage 18

May 27, 2005 — If Paolo Savoldelli (Discovery) was hoping to put a definitive nail in the coffin of the hopes of Gilberto Simoni (Lampre) and Jose Rujano (Selle Italia) in today’s 39km individual time trial, the mission was left unaccomplished. And while Savoldelli produced an excellent effort, finishing 4th on the stage only 23 seconds behind Ivan Basso (CSC), the stage winner and Giro hard-luck story, Simoni and Rujano remained within striking distance with plenty of climbing left in one of the most entertaining major tours in years.

Basso, who but for one ill stage has been the strongman throughout the Giro, beat Vladimir Karpets by nine seconds, with TT specialist David Zabriskie (CSC) 20 seconds back in third. Simoni was 10th, 1:34 down on the winning time but only 1:11 down on Savoldelli, while Rujano turned in a strong effort for the climbing specialist, losing 1:36 on Savoldelli.

Tomorrow’s 190km stage to Sestrieres, with three massive climbs on the menu, will be the decider.
