Garmin-Cervélo Appoints Peter Van Petegem as Classics Advisor

release by Team Garmin-Cervélo

February 11, 2011 (Boulder, CO) – Garmin-Cervélo today announced that it has appointed cycling legend, Peter Van Petegem, as a Classics Advisor for the spring classics season. Van Petegem, a two-time Flanders and one-time Parix-Roubaix winner, will join the team this spring, advising on the tricky Flandrien roads and working directly with Jonathan Vaughters to maximize the results of Garmin-Cervélo’s incredibly talented Classics group.

Van Petegem, a classics specialist, is one of only ten riders to ever win the Ronde van Vlaanderen and Paris-Roubaix in the same season. He retired from cycling in 2007 and is coming out of cycling retirement because he is excited to work with what he believes is the strongest Classics team in the peloton. “I am very excited to work with such a talented group of riders,” said Van Petegem. “I am sure that our combined expertise will strengthen the team and I can’t wait to get back on the road with Team Garmin-Cervélo.”

With a Classics line-up boasting Tyler Farrar, Andreas Klier, Roger Hammond, Heinrich Haussler, Thor Hushovd, Martijn Maaskant, Gabriel Rasch, Sep Vanmarcke, Johan Van Summeren and more, Team Garmin-Cervélo will be looking to maximize opportunities throughout the spring. “We’ve said all along that we’ve wanted to become stronger in the Classics and now we’re coming 2011 with one of the strongest Classics line-ups in the peloton, with one of the best advisors ,” said Jonathan Vaughters. “Having never ridden the Cobbled Classics myself, I thought it was important to have someone else in the car with that experience. Van Petegem’s expertise on the roads, the tactics, the equipment and Classics strategy will be invaluable for us as a group.”
