Eric Wohlberg Second Behind Leipheimer In California

April 24, 2006 – Symmetrics’ Eric Wohlberg, three-time Olympian and mutliple National Champion, is back to racing since his crash in Brazil. This past weekend the veteran rider rode in the Wente Road Race.

Racing with a small splint on his wrist, the tough Canadian hit the roads of Livermore, California for a 140km race of five 28km laps with two small ring climbs. It was a solid Northern California field, including Tour de France favourite, Levi Leipheimer (Gerolsteiner).

The 100-plus field thinned to twenty odd riders by the last lap due to several attacks and general attrition with the tough pace. Wohlberg got away on the final lap and ended up TT’ing behind Leipheimer, finishing second.

“It was good to be back racing,” Wohlberg said. “I covered a move, going with Giant Strawberry’s James Mattis and it ended up sticking. Even though I still have the splint on, I was pretty happy with my fitness and recovery from the injury. It’s a good sign for the rest of the year.”
