E-Bikes are Hot in Europe Despite Economic Slowdown

by pedalmag.com

November 18, 2009 – Despite forecasts of doom and gloom in the bike industry due to the economic downturn, sales of electric bikes in the Netherlands, Europe’s biggest e-bike bike marketplace, continue to increase at a surprisingly fast pace. In fact, e-bike sales in the Netherlands were up 41% more this year than over the same period in 2008, reports Bike Europe.

However, the rise in popularity of the electric bike, has led to decreases in sales of other bicycle niches, like city bikes and touring bikes. Kid’s bike sales are also down by 12%. Overall, the Independent Bicycle Dealer (IBD) market share of all bicycles sold has decreased by 7% this year from last.
