March 8, 2008 (Toronto, ON) – It’s been almost three weeks since Duke’s Cycle was destroyed in a 6-alarm fire on Queen St. West that devastated a section of the city block between Bathurst and Portland streets in Toronto. Since then Gary Duke, owner of the 94-year old store, Canada’s third oldest bike shop established in 1914, has received an outpouring of support and was in good spirits at the 2008 Toronto International Bicycle Show.
“Everything’s been going well,” said Duke. “We’ve received good wishes from so many customers, suppliers and supporters it’s amazing, and that really helps keep us all focused. We expect to be open again in the Spadina and Richmond St. area by April 1 and to be there for about two years. We hope to break ground for the rebuild in our familiar location on Queen St. West within six months and move back into our new building there within 18 months.”
When asked what the plans are for the new store a smiling Duke replied, “I finally want to have a basement.” We’ll have more news on Duke’s Cycle soon – meanwhile check out their web site for updates as well at www.dukescycle.com.
