Cross on the Rock 2014 – Coal Cross and the Night Before Coal Cross

September 19, 2014 (Nanaimo, BC) – Every year we start organizing the Cross on the Rock Series early. EARLY… as in about a week after the series ends and sometimes even during the series we are organizing for the next year. Every year it seems we are pushing at the end to get information out… to find up the details… to get it dialed in for you guys.

This year is an exception. We are even LATER. This is mostly because my business, Frontrunners-Nanaimo, moved locations after 15 years to a new shop on Bowen Road. Stefan and I have been working our butts off getting things built, organized, destroyed, packed, stored, packed again, moved and open.

We are “in” but the shop is not “finished”. Tonight I should be up bolting things to the wall with Stefan but instead I am dialing in the last things of the series with Curtis, Lisa, Mark and Roland for this weekend. To make up for it everyone that races COTR needs to come into the new Frontrunners in Nanaimo (#1-1825 Bowen Road) and buy something during the cross season. That would make Stefan happy and make up for me not being there tonight.

Onto the NEWS… and there is a LOT of it!! (Race information. Series Change etc.)

This weekend is the SEASON Opener for our 9th COTR season.

There are 3 things you need to do in the next few days:

1). Get a license with Cycling BC. The one you need is the $45 BC Citizen License. That will cover you for all of our COTR events including Provincial Championships this year. The UCI one is the one you want if you are racing National Championships. The “Club Associate Membership” will NOT do for you. If you don’t want to buy a license… no problem. You just pay $10 extra per event to race… and you can still pay.

2) Check your bike over… check it over again… check your tires… check your chain… check your brakes… have it dialed.

3) REGISTER. This has proven to be the hardest part but don’t worry… it takes only a few minutes and you have a LOT of minutes between now and Saturday Night when we will cut registration off. Link will go live on our freshly revised COTR web site as soon as we have it.

Register for all 6 races before September 13th at 7:00pm and receive $10 off the series for Beginner Categories and $20 off the series for Intermediate, Masters, Open and Expert Categories. Discount will be displayed in the payment summary as individual discounts off each event.

It all starts in Cumberland

SATURDAY NIGHT.
The first ever Waverly Cross Crit. See attached poster!! Race start at 5:30. The course is ON and OFF road so Cross Tires are MANDATORY! Two categories: Open Men. Open Women. Must be over 18 years to play.

Book a night in the Riding Fool Hostel and then get ready for…

SUNDAY. COTR #1. Coal Cross.

How many times have we raced in Cumberland now… it never disappoints! Last year was a MONSOON. Opening up the series with one of the wettest races in COTR history. This year the weather looks… well… nice. More like 2 years ago. Long sleeve skin suits NOT needed!

Super Lap… for the EXPERT MEN’S race only to try it out for this race. Super Lap is a 15-20 second short cut that a racer can take ONCE during the race. They cannot take it on the FIRST or the LAST lap. Other than that they can take it at any time. It is a strategic move. Shake and Bake. Bridge up … use it for whatever. IF a racer takes a Super Lap more than once… they get added on 3:00 to their time. So be careful. There will be someone keeping track of who goes through but it is only their job to record numbers… not to tell riders who has one left or has not used them. No information given.

HELP WELCOME: As always these races do NOT put themselves on. If you can help with Registration, Timing (experience is an asset), Set up, tear down, course monitor… please e-mail Curtis at saundersdiaz@hotmail.com You don’t have to help for the WHOLE DAY so we can split it up a bit if needed/wanted.

Weekly CX Rides on Vancouver Island.
I know there are MORE rides out there but I have only received notice of 1.5 of them so far.

Trail Bikes in Courtenay has a weekly ride at 5:45.
M.I.V.A. has a (maybe) weekly clinic/short race… but the details are not readily available so dig around on their FB page and their Web site and maybe drop them a note… in Nanaimo.

Anyone else have anything going on at their Bike shop? If not… you should!
