Couger Mountain Circuit Race – Health Net Report

September 12, 2005 – While most of his teammates from the Health Net Pro Cycling Team Presented by Maxxis have shut it down for the season, Mike Sayers made the drive from his new home in Sacramento to Sonoma’s Infineon Raceway for the Couger Mountain Classic Circuit Race.

It was worth the trip, but Sayers needed every bit of the good form he displayed last weekend in San Francisco to secure a strong second place finish behind Glenn Mitchell (Kodak Gallery/Sierra Nevada), and just ahead of Mitchell’s teammates Scott Zwizanksi and Jackson Stewart.

Kodak Gallery/Sierra Nevada brought at least a 12-pack of riders to what is something of a hometown race for the team, while San Francisco-based Webcor also brought a full squad.

Despite the best efforts of the KG/SN squad to shake Sayers, he still found himself in the decisive break on the final lap, with Mitchell and Neil Shirley (Seasilver). But a touch of wheels with Mitchell sent Shirley to the tarmac and out of contention. After the crash, Shirley’s teammate Daniel Ramsey tried to bridge to Sayers and Mitchell, but only succeeded in towing Zwizanski close enough to jump across. With Zwizanski leading out, Sayers was unable to get around Mitchell in the finish.

“There really wasn’t much I could do against all those guys,” Sayers said. “I just did my best to follow moves.”
