September 12, 2008 РCerv̩lo TestTeam is pleased to announce the signing of Jean Paul van Poppel and Jens Zemke as sports directors and Theo Maucher as the administration manager of the new team. Jean Paul van Poppel (NED) is a nine-time Tour de France stage winner. As sports director for the Cerv̩lo TestTeam he will be supported by multiple German Champion Jens Zemke (GER). As former professional riders they will bring considerable experience to the team as coaches.
Forty-five year-old Jean Paul van Poppel became involved as a sports director in women’s cycling when he retired as a professional racer. Most recently he has been managing and working as a sports director with the Dutch Team Flexpoint.
Jens Zemke is also well known in women’s cycling. The forty-one year old native German has worked as a coach and sports director, since 2002, for the women’s team Equipe Nürnberger Versicherungen. Under his direction the team has won two World Champion titles, one silver medal at the 2004 Olympics in Athens.
“The change to the Cervélo TestTeam is the next logical step for me,” said Zemke. “It’s a dream come true where I can contribute my skills to help establish a new top class team.”
The team’s new administrative manager is forty-nine year old Theo Maucher (GER), currently team coordinator and sports director of Team Gerolsteiner. Maucher is very supportive of the new TestTeam philosophy, “I’m pleased to work and to help build up this new team,” he said, “where the success in the cycling sport is important but not only goal.”
“With Jean Paul van Poppel, Jens Zemke and Theo Maucher we were able to employ our first choice candidates,” said Thomas Campana, Managing Director of the Cervélo Test Team. “They stand 100% behind our concept, and, are as convinced as we are that this team will enjoy tremendous success.”
About Cervélo TestTeam
Five of the bike industry’s thought leaders, Cervélo, Zipp, Speedplay, Vittoria and 3T have put a new spin on professional cycling and product innovation with the formation of the Cervélo TestTeam. Though the arrival of 2008 Tour de France winner Carlos Sastre and sprint ace Thor Hushovd leaves no doubt about the performance level of the team, racing success is not the only goal. Equally important for the partners in this project is to involve the Cervélo TestTeam riders in product development and providing technical feedback. Last but not least, they will participate in activities with our customers, making the sport more accessible to cycling fans.
