Canada’s Roth 2nd and Langlois 3rd at Winston Salem Cycling Classic – Albrecht 6th in Women’s Race

May 30, 2017 (Winston-Salem, NC) – Reigning Canadian TT champ Ryan Roth (Silber Pro Cycling) and current Elite Men’s road champ, Bruno Langlois (Garneau Quebecor) landed on the final podium in second and third respectively at the 178km Winston Salem Cycling Classic on May 29 in North Carolina. Robin Carpenter (USA) Holowesko / Citadel Racing p/b Hincapie Sportswear took the win.

Roth won here last year and was also the defending champ of the event that is part of the city’s Memorial Day weekend celebrations and billed as the toughest one-day race in North America. The course features 13 technical 13.7km laps marked by false flats and short punchy climbs through the city’s residential and downtown streets.

Silber’s Nigel Ellsay and Stephen Bassett ensured their team was present in the two major breaks of the day. Constant attacks and bridging nullified the first break, while Garneau Quebecor brought back the second major move of the day on behalf of their leader, Langlois.

With 50km to go, Roth attacked the front group of riders that had been whittled down to 8-10. Langlois latched on and shortly afterwards Holowesko’s Robin Carpenter bridged. The trio worked together to hold off a hard charging group of five, including Oscar Sevilla (Medellin Columbia), Travis McCabe (UHC), Edwin Avila (Illuminate), Ty Magner (Holowesko) and Juan Carjaval (Medellin Columbia). Carpenter attacked decisively on the short, steep KOM hill with 1km to go and soloed to a well-earned victory. Roth would beat Canadian countryman, Langlois in the sprint for final podium spots.

“I’m happy to be on the podium in a really hard race,” said Roth. “Hopefully this gets the ball rolling for Saguenay, Beauce and Nationals.” His win here last year kicked off a series of victories including the overall at the Grand Prix Cyclistes de Saguenay and the Canadian National ITT title.

“The team was very solid and was able to build throughout the race. This good performance should convert into good results in the coming races,” commented Langlois.
