February 28, 2016 (Gent, Belgium) – Leah Kirchmann raced to 4th place at Team Liv-Plantur’s opening one-day race of the season at Omloop Het Nieuwsblad in Belgium. The victory went to world champion Elisabeth Armistead (Boels Dolmans Cycling Team). Team Liv-Plantur showed a strong performance in the first race of the season on European roads at the Omloop Het Nieusblad as Leah Kirchmann finished in an impressive 4th place.

The race got off to a very fast start as the race came alive with 51km remaining when Jessie Daams (Lotto Soudal Ladies) jumped away from the peloton and gained a quick advantage of 45? over the bunch. But she eventually got caught and then the next attacks started to fly from the bunch with only stretches of cobbles to the finish line.

With 26km to go, Amy Pieters (Wiggle High5) and Elisabeth Armistead made the second prominent attack of the day and they worked well together building a gap of 40? over the peloton, containing Team Liv-Plantur riders Leah Kirchmann and Floortje Mackaij.

With about 10km left, Elisabeth Armistead made the decisive move, she placed a well-timed attack and managed an impressive solo victory in the opening European race of the season with her rainbow jersey stripes.

Chantal Blaack (Boels – Dolmans Cycling Team) was the fastest in the bunch sprint for the second place, just in front of Leah Kirchmann who took fourth. Floortje was not far behind in 12th place, followed by Rozanne in 32nd place respectively.

Leah Kirchmann said: “I am happy with a 4th place finish and it was a good way to kick off the classics season. The result will give me a lot of confidence that I can reach the podiums in the upcoming races. The team rode a strong race and gave Floortje and me the best chance at being in the final.”

Coach Hans Timmermans said after the race: “The first part of the race was very challenging with a lot of tailwinds but the team always managed to stay in a good position in the peloton. Unfortunately, after 30km Riejanne crashed and had to abandon.

“At the halfway point of the race, on the “Cote de Trieu” the race exploded with many riders being dropped but Leah and Floortje were always in strong positions. After the climb, there was a lot of headwinds, the race ended up being very fast without a lot of attacks taking place.

“In the final kilometers, Elisabeth Armistead attacked and she was extremely strong. The chase was being done by the Wiggle team while Leah and Floortje saved their energy in the bunch.

“The sprint could have been better with our riders, but Leah got in a good position before the last corner and she finished fourth, which is a great result in one of her first spring classics ever.”
