Canada’s Britton 3rd on USA Pro Challenge Stage 5 – Report, Results

report by Team SmartStop

August 22, 2014 (Breckenridge, CO) – Today’s stage offered probably the last chance for any attack on the yellow jersey of BMC’s Tejay Van Garderen.  Our Team SmartStop plan remained constant from yesterday with a wish to be represented in the early break, and once this was established to provide all the support we could offer our top 10 on GC man Julian Kyer.

A very wet and fast start from Woodland Park, hometown of my back seat mechanic Alan Sekowski and the race was immediately on.  We’d have bad luck as once again we’d be called for the first flat of the day for Travis McCabe.  Our Maxxis tires have been incredible and this is the first puncture I’ve seen the team get in my time here.

Eric Marcotte would infiltrate the first serious move of the day with 7 other riders, but Optum would again miss the move as they did yesterday and peg the gap at 15 seconds for the next 15 minutes of hard racing.  They would eventually succeed in reeling in the attack and place Scott Zwizanski in the next move which would prove to be the good one.

Rob Britton again would do well and make this group of 12 along with 2 Garmin riders in Ben King and Janier Acevedo.  With the former being the highest on GC at a whopping 12 minutes behind the yellow jersey, BMC would feather the gap outwards to 4 minutes.

Hoosier Pass would provide the first test with it’s summit only 23 km out from the finish in Breckenridge.  Trek’s Didier would crest first followed closely by the two Garmins and Rob.  The rest of the break dropped for good.

The threesome would catch Didier on the run into town for the first time and approach the base of Boreas Pass intact.  Ben King would attack first and with Rob struggling slightly and Acevedo sitting shotgun, the pace was set by Didier for the entirety of the climb.  He did so well he not only caught and passed King but dropped the other two with only a 4km drop between himself and a famous stage win.

King would struggle and importantly not make it back to Rob and Acevedo, thus the duo were alone in clawing back time to the Luxemburg rider.  Rob knew it was do or die and gave generously his efforts to Acevedo to ensure a shot for the stage, but Didier would hold on to a slim advantage over Acevedo who would slip by Rob for second.

Back behind we heard the yellow jersey had been under attack and was isolated with the other GC contenders.  Julian would be distanced slightly but ride consistently to keep his top 10 on GC while Van Garderen was never really in any difficulty to remain in the lead going into tomorrow’s Vail Pass time trial.

A fantastic day for the team and we look forward to the weekends stages.
