June 16, 2015 (Etobicoke, ON) – The Canada Cup BMX series kicked off this past weekend in Etobicoke at the new Centennial Park Toronto 2015 Pan Am Games BMX venue, the first event hosted at the new facility. The event also did double duty as the official test event for the upcoming Games next month.
Argentina sent a powerhouse squad to the event, sweeping the top spots on both days. Day 1 saw Gabriela Diaz (Arg) and Mariana Diaz (Arg) take first and second in the elite women’s comp, with Amelia Walsh (Can) finishing top Canadian in third.
In the Day 1 elite men’s contest, Ramiro Marino (Arg) and Gonzalo Molina (Arg) swept the first two positions, while James Brown (Can) snagged the bronze medal position as the best Canuck.
The second day also served as round two of the series and saw Gabriela Diaz take a repeat victory. Walsh moved up a spot for silver, with Mariana Diaz winding up third.
The elite men’s day 2 had another Argentinian topping the podium, courtesy of Federico Villegas (Arg). Canadian superstar Tory Nyhaug (Can) finished second, followed by Brazil’s Renato Rezende (Bra) in third.
The state-of-the-art facility, built by world-famous Elite Trax Inc, with a permanent dual start ramp, will help progress the sport of BMX in the region for generations to come, a key legacy project of the Toronto 2015 Pan-American Games.
