February 5, 2008 – Here is the latest news from Bicycle Newfoundland & Labrador, including Memorial University Psychological Testing Research Project for Male Cyclists aged 19+, WestJet Travel Deals for Members, Sport NL Bursary, and 2008 BNL Spinning.

Physiological Testing for Male Cyclists Aged 19+
– Subject: Physiological Testing
– Who: School of Human Kinetics and Recreation, Memorial University of Newfoundland, St. John’s NL, A1C 5S7

Dear Coach and/or cyclist:

Our laboratory is starting a new research project this February and we are looking for participants. Basically, each participant will perform an incremental to exhaustion VO2 max test. Following the VO2max test, participants will perform a time-to-exhaustion test on the cycle ergometer. This test consists of continuous cycling to exhaustion at the workload reached during the incremental to exhaustion VO2 max test. Finally the cyclist will perform a wingate test. The Wingate test (30-second maximal effort) will be performed on a fully adjusted electromagnetically braked cycle ergometer. In addition to the testing, subjects will also perform a hydrostatic weighing (body fat %) and thigh measurements.

Following the testing the cyclists will have completed:
– VO2 max test (aerobic performance)-similar to a computrainer test
– Time to exhaustion (how long they can hold a max aerobic effort)
– Wingate test (anaerobic measure of power)

This will be a great opportunity for local cyclists to receive world class physiological testing. We can also arrange for all results and training implications to be presented to you, as well as your cyclists.

*Cyclists must be male and 19 years or older (or close w/parental approval)*.

Please get back to me with any questions or concerns. Cheers,
Geoff Power

2008 BNL Spinning
Thanks everybody for posting your preferences for spinning on the BNL forum. This has allowed us to choose location-day-time combinations that we hope will suit most people. Spinning will be held at three different Nubody’s locations (3 different classes to choose from) as follows:

– Monday 7:30pm — Torbay Road (NEW TIME)
– Tuesday 7pm — Atlantic Place
– Thursday 8pm — Mount Pearl (NEW TIME)

We’re going to start classes the week of January 8th and go until Easter. This translates to 11 classes. Fees are $45 which works out to about $4 per class — cheapest workout in town!). Participants must have a BNL general membership which is $30. For this year’s instructors, general membership is free, but you still have to fill it in and submit it.

If you are interested in registering for any one of the classes listed above, please email Amy at amyprysephillips@hotmail.com to sign up. First come, first served! You MUST bring payment and completed membership application to the first class.

Note: if you want to take a chance and show up to another class, you can join the workout as long as there is a free bike (people who have signed up for that particular class obviously have first dibbs). One other note: Nubody’s no longer provides workout towels, so you should plan to bring your own to use on the bike.

Happy Spinnin!
