by pedalmag.com

November 15, 2011 (South Surrey, BC) – The fifth round of the BC Cup Cyclocross Series experienced to weather truly befitting the discipline in South Surrey on Saturday. The earlier Beginner, U17, and Cat 3/4 Men’s categories managed to duck the incoming storm, which hit the Masters, Open Women’s, and Elite Men’s racers with bitter cold winds, driving rain, and mud. Skills became a major deciding factor on the course, which included significant off-camber grass sections, tight corners, and a waterlogged pump track section.

After taking an early flyer in the Open Women’s race, Sandra Walter (Local Ride Racing) had to settle for second spot. She was reeled in by BC Cup leader Jean Ann Berkenpas (XPREZO-BORSAO) after a lap-and-a-half of chasing in the deteriorating conditions. Joele Guynup (Condo Group/Marin) cruised to third place.

It was a race of attrition In the Elite Men’s competition, as conditions continued to deteriorate for the 1:00 pm start. In the end, it was BC Cup leader Kevin Noiles (Sportique) who snatched another victory. He was followed by crowd favourite Sven Sturm (Trek Red Truck) in second, and hardman Mike Berkenpas (Local Ride Racing) in third.
