April 10, 2006 – Athletes CAN extends congratulations to all Commonwealth Games athletes on their outstanding performances at the 2006 Commonwealth Games in Melbourne, Australia in March.

The Canadian team won a total of 86 medals to finish 3rd overall out of 39 competing countries, behind Australia and England.

“I had an opportunity to see the athletes compete and I was very proud of their performances both on and off the field,” says Athletes CAN President Michael Smith, who acted as the Athlete Advocate for the Canadian team in Melbourne. “I also extend my congratulations to the coaches and team managers for their contribution in these games.”

Athletes CAN as well acknowledges the hard work of Commonwealth Games Canada in making the Commonwealth Games in Melbourne a great success for Canada’s athletes.
