April 17, 2017 (The Netherlands) – The Union Cycliste Internationale (UCI) is pleased to announce that the city of Apeldoorn (the Netherlands) will host the 2018 UCI Track Cycling World Championships presented by Tissot. Following a very successful 2017 UCI Track Cycling World Championships presented by Tissot in Hong Kong, track cycling’s flagship event returns to Europe in 2018.

The 2018 edition will take place in Apeldoorn, Netherlands on February 28th to March 4th. Built in 2008, the Apeldoorn velodrome has already hosted the UCI Track Cycling World Championships in 2011, the UCI Para-cycling Track World Championships in 2015, and the Tissot UCI Track Cycling World Cup in 2016-2017. On this occasion, a new 250-metre cycling track was unveiled, within a 5,000-seater arena.

The Hong Kong championships were only the second time the event has been held in Asia, and featured a number of historic firsts: the introduction of women’s Madison, leading to gender parity in events; an unprecedented level of participation for a post-Olympic year (41 nations, 344 athletes); and the first rainbow jersey in Malaysia’s history by Awang Azizulhasni in the men’s Keirin.

Alongside this announcement, the UCI has awarded the 2017 UCI Junior Track Cycling World Championships to Montichiari, Italy. The discipline’s newest generation will come together on 23rd-27th August 2017 at a 250-metre track opened in 2010, and which has already hosted the Junior Track Cycling World Championships that same year, and the UCI Para-cycling Track World Championships in 2011 and 2016.
