Amgen Tour of California — Stage 3 Report, Full Results and Photos

February 20, 2008 (San Jose, Calif.) — Rain gave in to sun this morning in Modesto, with storm clouds passing by the first epic climb of the race of today’s epic 152.2km (103 miles) Stage 3. At 4,360ft, Mt. Hamilton is the first HC (hors categorie) climb of the Amgen Tour of California, and undoubtably, its summit at kilometer 96 would test for chinks in the armour of contending teams and GC hopefuls.

Along with the Cat 1 Sierra Road climb at 128km, it promised to shake up the field creating opportunities for breakaways in today’s race before spinning down the last 22 miles to it’s third consecutive finish in San Jose.

Last year, CSC’s Jens Voigt took the leader’s gold jersey from Levi Leipheimer that day, but today Voigt wasn’t in sight as Astana’s Jose Rubiera led team mate Leipheimer up the hurtin’ Hamilton in 36 degree foggy weather to the summit.

All riders knew this would be a stage of high attrition and take it’s toll it did on yesterday’s leader, Tyler Farrar (USA) Slipstream-Chipotle p/b H30 who came down with a flu last night. The pure climbers had the advantage, but with 35km to go in the stage after the climbs, the surviving sprinters may be able to regroup before it was too late.

Scott Nydam, (BMC) who showed heart with a 144km solo ride yesterday still had legs, breaking away with two riders in Modesto and kept the gap peaking at 4 minutes and 50 seconds until Slipstream Chipotle’s Steven Cozza, 22, from Petaluma, CA bridged the gap at the onset of the first climb. Nydam powered up the first KOM climb putting him in the KOM jersey ahead of his teammate, Jackson Stewart. Paul Martens (Rabobank) took second while Cyril Lemone (Credit Agricole) and Cozza closely followed.

On the second KOM they lost a minute on the peloton with the same results except Cozza overtook Lemone. Lemone taxed himself so much on the climbs that he ended up finishing after the allotted time and was later disqualifed

Mt. Hamilton took it’s first victim prematurely. Before Farrar could ascend, he pulled over — his stomach flu got him and he lost everything.

Climbing into the clouds the first group of riders absorbed the three leaders at 3km before the foggy 35degree summit. Leipheimer was well-planted in a group of 15 as Rubiera took the first group with over Mt. Hamilton. But George Hincapie’s (High Road) sudden move as they twisted down the steepest descent of the tour, was too much opening a 45-second gap hitting speeds of 76.8kph.

Astana chased with three riders but Hincapie held onto his lead over over Leipheimer and Rubiera through the ascent to Sierra Road. But it wasn’t to be as Hincapie admitted later, “I took a risk that sometimes pays off, but I didn’t have any help with the wind on the descent and hoped for a better result.”

The last 24km of flat was a battle between Leipheimer and the eventual winner and new Best Young Rider, Robert Gesink (Rabobank) who finished Leipheimer off in the last 50 meters, explaining, “We had an agreement to work together and then it was up to me to focus on the line and dig in – it is a great feeling to beat the best, though I am not disillusioned to think I will be working to go for the GC – but I am hoping to move up a lot.” Coming second today was good enough to bring Leipheimer the prized leader’s jersey, the ultimate goal.

It wasn’t a great day for Canada’s Kevin Lacombe (Kelly Benefit Strategies-Medifast), who this morning was excited to rejoin the group after “burning 6,000 calories but only eating 2,000 at Sacramento’s stage”. The calorie deficit went against him, and at the 48km mark Lacombe was taken to hospital to x-ray his ribs. While he was riding near a caravan car it suddenly stopped causing him to hit and break the side window damaging his elbow severely enough that he had to abandon the tour.

Fortunately it turned out that he had nothing broken but his dream to do better and finish his first AToC. “I’m sad because I wanted a chance to prove myself here, but its ok, I’ll stay with the team and support them, and there are a lot more races on the calendar to race and I’m ok, really.”

Dominique Rollin (Toyota-United Pro) was saving up his energy for other stages as he rolled in at 75th place with the last group which included the usual suspects not known for their climbing prowess on a damaging day in the hills like Tom Boonen (Bel) Quick Step and Mario Cipollini (Ita) Rock Racing who, grinning when asked this morning what he was capable of today after pulling off an upset in Sacramento (slicing past the young guns without a leadout man): “Today, I’m just going to stay with the peloton, it’s not my day to shine””don’t worry, there are other days I’ll be there.”

A total of 11 riders abandoned today’s stage – more damage than any AtoC stage will likely cause. Tomorrow’s 218km (135.3 miles) Stage 4 is closer to the coast — Seaside to San Luis Obisbo.
