Alberta Masters Provincial RR Championships

September 11, 2007 – Those of you that weren’t out as spectators, volunteers or racers missed an excellent day of bike racing on Sunday NE of Crossfield when the annual Provincial Masters Road Race Championships were held. The weather conditions were as near to perfect as they get around Calgary with a southerly wind at 10-20 kph and ambient temperatures ranging from 11 to 15 at race time. Mind you at 7:30 in the morning it was considerably cooler.

We had 74 riders this year with the biggest categories being Cat A and B men. The 3 women and the single Cat D and E riders were very lonesome but they made up for it with their individual efforts. On the volunteer side of things we had a total of 28 including Chief Commissar Chris Wood and assistants Pat Hodgkinson, Dennis Gregory, Carol Mayne and Danny Cronin plus a great job by Andy Holmwood who volunteered to help us with the race. Many people did double duty on Sunday doing anything from Registration to Corner Marshalling and Photography but the “Above the Call of Duty” award goes to Randy Szasz who collected signs and equipment, did registration and then drove a commissar as well.

This year we ran the race so that the medals and cash prizes were given out on a 5 year age group basis so we saw many head to head battles between the youngest and oldest individuals in an age group for fastest over all. The course through the “rolling ranchlands” NE of Crossfield was more challenging than many riders thought it would be as the original starting groups were strung out of many kilometres.

The fastest man and overall winner for Category A (and maybe the youngest male participant while still being 30 or over) was Trev Williams from Speed Theory. The fastest Cat A 35-39 year old was independent rider Rob Brandrick.

In Category B the fastest two riders were from the 45-49 age bracket with Peter Toth of Juventus winning out followed closely by Zibi Szymanski of United Cycle. The fastest in the younger Cat A 40-44 age bracket was Bill Quinney from The Bike Shop.

The race for fastest overall in the Category C group was hotly contested by Paul Macdonald of Pedalhead in the 50-54 age bracket and Roy Quade from CrankMasters in the 55-59 age bracket. Paul won out by a whisker at the finish line.

Our lonesome Cat D rider, Lev Krivitsky, choose to ride with the Cat C guys for the competition while Peter Bigg riding in Category E decided to push the women.

Joanne Breau from Bicisport, current National Champion in her age group, road a 56 kilometre time trial as she easily out distanced the other riders in the small women’s group for her win. First place finishes went to Joanne in Category B 40-44 age bracket and to Shantal Koenig in Category A 30-34 age bracket.

Special thanks go to Andy Holmwood and Carol Mayne for supporting the Masters Racing scene in Alberta by ensuring that registrations and race results were up to their usual high standards.

Draw prizes for this event were provided by Rob Onodera and Bonvida Wines and were a welcome addition to a successful race.
