Tour de France Stage 3 Report, Full Results, Photos – Gerrans Scores Orica-GreenEdge’s 1st TdF Victory

by Peter Kraiker

July 01, 2013 (Calvi, Corsica) – On the final day in Corsica, Simon Gerrans (Aus) delivered a huge win for Orica-GreenEdge by getting a perfect leadout from teammate Daryl Impey (Rsa). For the second day in a row Peter Sagan (Svk) Cannondale just missed winning. The stage didn’t change the overall standings with Radioshack Leopard’s Jan Bakelants (Bel) retaining yellow and Ryder Hesjedal (Can) Garmin-Sharp staying safely in the group at one second back.

The third and final stage on Corsica was relatively short, a mere 145.5 kilometres from Ajaccio to Calvi, and like yesterday’s stage it featured four categorized climbs. The weather was excellent as was the scenery.

Today’s start sent the riders up a climb and within a few kilometres a break had formed that included Lieuwe Westra (Vacansoleil-DCM), Sebastien Minard (AG2R), Alexis Vuillermoz (Sojasun), Cyril Gautier (Europcar) and Simon Clarke (Orica-GreenEdge).

As Clarke went on the hunt for mountain points in the break, the sprinters in the pack were after the intermediate sprint points knowing that it would be hard to contest the finish. It was Marcel Kittel (Ger) Team Argos-Shimano who was there ahead of André Greipel (Ger) Lotto Belisol and Sagan. The stage also saw the first riders abandon the Tour with Andrey Kaschechkin of Astana and Yoann Bagot of Cofidis packing it in.

The race wound its way through stunning countryside on roads used for the motorsport “Tour de Corse” and it earned its nickname “Rally of 10,000 bends”. With narrow roads and never-ending turns it required the riders’ constant attention to avoid mishaps. On the technical descents the peloton was strung out in a long single-file line with the Radioshack Leopard team of race leader Bakelants at the front of setting a brisk pace and keeping the yellow jersey safe.

At the front, Clarke showed his strength by taking the mountain points for all three of the early climbs to tie Pierre Rolland (Fra) Team Europcar at 5. As they approached the final climb of the day, the 3.3 km cat. 2 Col de Marsolino, the gap was down to 38 seconds as the leaders hit the 25km to go mark. Clarke and Minard set off for the final points on their own, leaving Gautier and Vuillermoz behind. The pace in the peloton was starting to show and the pure sprinters were spat out the back.

While Clarke was no threat to the GC at 7 minutes back, Gautier was another story so the GC teams were all on the front reeling him in. As the gap came down to a handful of seconds, Rolland and a helper jumped ahead to launch him for maximum points. Euskatel’s Mikel Nieve Ituralde (Esp) tried to challenge but Rolland, in full polka-dot kit, was determined to keep the lead in the mountain classification and reached the top first.

He tried his luck on the descent, as did Sylvain Chavanel (Fra) of Omega Pharma – Quick Step, Lars Nordhaug (Nor) for Belkin and Nieve. They built up a small lead but Radioshack, Orica-GreenEdge and Cannondale all had men on the front chasing them down. The field had been significantly reduced on the climb but the yellow jersey was safely in the bunch. None of the pure sprinters were there but Sagan, World Champion Phillip Gilbert (Bel) BMC and a select group of contenders were on the hunt for victory.

Tom Dumoulin (Ned) Argos-Shimano went with 1.5km to go but was reeled in. The Cannondale train came to the front to set up Sagan. With 300 meters to go, Impey led Simon Gerrans up the inside and past Sagan. Gerrans then launched off Impey’s wheel with Sagan trying to come around him on the left. The sprint was too close for any celebrations on the line and it needed a photo to determine that Gerrans had crossed the line just ahead of Sagan. The finish did put Sagan into the points classification green jersey. Bakelants came across the line in the bunch and will start the team time trial in yellow.

Ryder Hesjedal finished safely in the pack for the second day in a row and remains one second back on GC. David Veilleux (Team Europcar) was 110th with fellow countryman Svein Tuft (Orica-GreenEdge) coming across the line in 150th.
