Track World Cup Cali Day 1 Report, Results – Bell 2nd in Omnium, Women’s Team Pursuit miss by 1,000th of a Second

December 16, 2010 (Cali, Colombia) – The second event of the 2011 UCI Track Cycling World Cup Tour got underway today in Cali, Colombia, and the Canadian track cycling team were looking for more international success. In the women’s team pursuit race, Canada’s team could not have been unluckier. In a tightly contested race, the team of Tara Whitten of Edmonton, Alta, Laura Brown of Vancouver, BC and Stephanie Roorda also Vancouver, missed their qualification to the final four and a shot at the podium by a mere one thousands of a second.

One thousand of a second (0.001) is the smallest recordable margin in track cycling. Canada’s trio stopped the clock at 3 minutes 25.674 seconds, while the German team posted a time of 3 minutes 25.673 seconds.

In the men’s omnium race, Zach Bell of North Vancouver, BC, is currently ranked in second place after two of six races. Bell finished fifth of the flying lap race and third of the points race. The remaining races of the men’s ominium will be held tomorrow.

Bell won the silver medal in the omnium event of the opening UCI World Cup race in Melbourne, Australia earlier this December.

In the men’s team sprint, Canada’s team comprised of Stephane Cossette of Chicoutimi, Quebec, Joseph Veloce of Fonthill, Ontario and Travis Smith of Calgary, Alberta finished in fifth place, just one spot of qualifying for the finals. The team stopped the clock with a time of 45.016 seconds.
