US Grand Prix of Sprinting Race Report – New Canadian Record

by Monique Sullivan

June 25, 2012 (Colorado Springs, Colorado) – This past weekend was the US Grand Prix of Sprinting in Colorado Springs. This was my last competition before the Games and was a great opportunity to work out some final kinks before we head to Europe.

The conditions were perfect on the first night and records were falling like crazy! I was really excited to finally break Lori-Ann’s [Meunzer] 200m record with a 10.84. The US, NED, COL and GER records also fell but most impressively Miriam Welte (Ger) broke the World Record with a 10.64!

On the 2nd night we had a sprint tournament and it was strange to be sprinting on a 333m track but I still learned some good lessons.

On the third night there was a lot of smoke in the air because of the devastating wildfires nearby. Many riders, including the Dutch and German teams, pulled out of the racing to be cautious.

We decided to go ahead with the racing, and I’m glad we did as the smoke cleared up in time for the flying lap record attempts and I got a new track record! (18.34 for 333m)

Hugo Barrette had a great performance in the Men’s Keirin finishing 4th, Joakim Albert got some great racing experience leading into Junior Worlds, and Heather Moyse has shown some great improvement and got lots of new racing experience with her first ever Keirin!

Special thanks to Mark Tyson and his daughter Claire Sanderson for their generous help this week!

This was one more step in our preparations for London, I am looking forward to getting back with the group and doing our final prep!
