Track Worlds Day 2 Results, Photos – Canada Wins Women’s Team Pursuit Bronze UPDATED

by Chris Reid

April 05, 2012 (Melbourne, Australia) – Canada’s Women’s Team Pursuit squad consisting of Tara Whitten, Jasmin Glaesser and Gillian Carleton brought home the bronze – Canada’s first team pursuit Worlds medal – after qualifying third on Day 2 of the Track World Championships in Melbourne. Great Britain set two world records, first in the qualifications and then in the final, on their way to gold as host team Australia settled for the silver.

Monique Sullivan qualified an impressive ninth in the women’s Sprint – in what is believed to be a PB time for her – behind top qualifier Anna Meares from Australia, who set a new world record with a time of 10.782. Unfortunately Sullivan was eliminated in the first round heats while her Cuban rival advanced to the quarter-finals.  This means Sullivan will have to look to the Keirin to qualify for the London Games, but oming into these championships she was in a better position mathematically to qualify in the Keirin.

In the men’s Omnium Zach Bell placed 5th in round one, the 250m Flying Lap; third in the Points race; and 8th in the Elimination to sit second overall after three rounds – more results to follow.
