March 27, 2015 (Banff, AB) – After seven consecutive years of hosting the Banff National Park Bike Fest, Banff Lake Louise Tourism, with the support of its stakeholders, have announced the cancellation of the event in 2015. The decision was based on ongoing evaluations of the destination’s festivals & special events strategy and needs of the community.

Banff National Park Bike Fest has centered on a four-day, five-stage competitive sporting event held across varying routes throughout the Town of Banff and reaching all the way to Lake Louise. All participants of the race event required a valid UCI license issued by the Alberta Bicycle Association or other Provincial Cycling Association.  The event had been scheduled to take place June 11-14, 2015.

The role of festivals & special events is essentially threefold; deliver positive economic impact through increased visitation, enhance the visitor experience through in-resort animation and vibrancy, and provide meaningful connections to the national park. There are many critical factors which are carefully weighed when deciding what events take place, including seasonal peak business periods, environmental impact, transportation disruptions, spectator appeal and accessibility, length of stay and incremental trip spend, and funding sustainability.

The current healthy business climate during the month of June combined with scheduled road improvements forcing the elimination of the popular Criterium race in the Town of Banff, contributed to the decision to cancel the event and reallocate resources in 2015.  Cycling, whether on paved paths or off, is a classic way to enjoy Banff National Park, and the tourism community is committed to seeking alternative platforms for showcasing this experience for the millions of visitors to the park every year.
