2011 Road Nationals Elite/U23 Men’s RR Report, Full Results, Photos UPDATED

by Chris Redden

June 25, 2011 (Milton, ON) – Team SpiderTech p/b C10 came prepared and won big as Svein Tuft lead a podium sweep in the Elite Men’s 180km road race at the 2011 IMMUNITY-FX Canadian Road Championships on Saturday. It was Tuft’s first road race National title and his second gold at these championships as he won his seventh ITT title on the opening day.

Joining him on the podium were teammates Will Routley, the defending champ, in second and Zach Bell in third. It was a well earned victory for the Langley, BC rider as on the final lap Tuft bridged up to his teammates who were in break for most of the day and the three rolled up to the finish line together for the SpiderTech triumph. Their teammate Hugo Houle, who finished 5th overall, won the sprint over Arnaud Papillon (Equipe Du Quebec) the defending champ, to take the U23 title as well making it a very special and historic day for Canada’s first UCI Pro Continental team.

On the penultimate lap we spoke briefly to SpiderTech’s Director Sportif Steve Bauer who said, “We weren’t taking any chances this year. Tuft will likely attack on the climb and may go for it – I’d like to see him win it.” And he did.

“These guys gave me a tremendous gift,” said Tuft post-race. “We’ve been working together for a number of years, and they gave it to me and I can’t thank them enough. This is something for my career I thought would be an amazing to pull off, and now it happened. It’s an amazing feeling.”

It wasn’t without a huge effort on SpiderTech’s part as there were many strong contenders in the men’s 178-strong field including Dominique Rollin (FDJ), David Veilleux (Europcar), and 2009 champ Christian Meier (UnitedHealthcare).

Their goal was to “…control the race from the start to the finish,” according to race winner Tuft and they truly did that. SpiderTech and H&R Block set a brisk early pace and a crash on the first lap took down as many as 20 riders behind the leaders with no serious injuries, but catching back on would not be an easy task given the pace.

All initial attacks were quickly nullified with riders being shed off the back as the peloton stretched its legs. During the fourth of fourteen laps, four riders went off the front of the pack – three of them from SpiderTech. BC’s Rob Britton of Team Bissell Pro Cycling was the odd man out in the break which included SpiderTech’s Routley, Bell and Keven Lacombe.

The foursome spent most of the rest of the race in time trial formation. Britton held his own but the numbers were not in his favour and his only hope was to try to beat one of the three in a potential final sprint to make the podium. But SpiderTech had other plans.

The leaders worked hard and had a gap of 1:30 by the 1/2 way point. Behind the peloton had fragmented with many strong players in the 19-rider lead chase group. Rollin, who snapped his top tube earlier and received a new bike, was at the front pushing with Veilleux. On the 8th lap it looked like the break may be caught but SpiderTech’s strength showed itself again as they were able to manage the chasing pack where they had six riders.

By lap 10 the gap was over two minutes and things were looking better for the break as the chase group seemed to be losing steam as both Rollin and Veilleux were suffering on the big climb. Yet Meier still had some legs and the gap had suddenly dropped to 47s by the 12th lap. SpiderTech took charge once again as Rollin called it a day.

Then Tuft attacked and left the chase group behind as he bridged to the leaders. Their final strategy was taking shape. On the penultimate lap Routley and Bell pushed the pace and shed their compatriots while Tuft sat on Britton’s wheel and then dropped him up the Rattlesnake Point hill as Bauer predicted. On the final lap Tuft bridged to his teammates as they came to the base of the final ascent up the climb.

Strength in numbers and talent to back it up is what took SpiderTech to the top today. By taking control of the chase group, the team was able to allow Tuft to go off the front and bridge up to the leaders and play their final trump card as the race came to an end.

The three rode together up the climb with no risk of getting caught by the chase group who had all but given up hope of catching them. And with that the 2011 Elite Men’s road race came to a sweet end for SpiderTech with a podium sweep and a well-deserved win for Svein Tuft.
