2009 U23 Nations Cup-Ville de Saguenay Stage 1 – Boivin 5th

report by Dominique Perras/Coupe des Nations-Ville de Saguenay

June 5, 2009 (Saguenay, Quebec) – Frenchmen Loic Desriac won the 137km hilly first stage of the Coupe des Nations-Ville de Saguenay held in Quebec, Canada. After almost 120km spent in a breakaway, Desriac was the lone survivor and barely managed to hold on to his lead by only 1 sec over the charging field. Thanks to the time bonuses, he now holds a 5-second lead over Danish Ramus Guldhammer and another Frenchman, Johan Lebon.

The day was characterized by a major breakaway that took off less than 10km into the stage. The group gained a maximum lead of two minutes, and included three Americans (Stetina, Keough and King), one Canadian (Joanisse), two riders each from Colombia and France, and one rider from Russia, Germany, Slovénia, Serbia and Rickey Jorgensen of Denmark.

The latter went on the gain enough points to grab the KOM jersey for tomorrow. With 30 km to go Desriac attacked on a small uphill and only Gabor Kasa of Serbia could hold on to his wheel. With 10km to go Desriac dropped his companion without even attacking, while all of his previous partners got re-absorbed by the field. He then managed to hold on to his lead while Guldhammer and Lebon nearly caught him at the line.

Friday is a 159km relatively flat stage around Jonquière, Québec. The UCI Nations Cup-Ville de Saguenay is the 5th of 6 races part of the UCI Nations Cup for the world’s best riders aged 19 to 22 years old. It is the only event of this series to be held outside Europe. It will be held over 5 stages from June 4-7, 2009.
