2009 Tour de Beauce Stage 6 Final Report, Full Results, Photos – Zwizanski Wins Overall

report by Daniel Fertin/Tour de Beauce

June 14, 2009 (Beauce, QC) – Scott Zwizanski (USA) Kelly Benefit Strategies has won the 24th annual Tour de Beauce following the 130km final Stage 6 St-Georges Circuit, 12 laps of a 10.8km route, won by Bernard Sulzberger (Aus) Fly V Australia with Bjorn Selanler (USA) Trek Livestrong in 2nd and Danilo Wyss (Sui) BMC Racing Team in 3rd. Top Canadian on the final stage was Charles Dionne (Can) Fly V Australia in 4th, while Derrick St. John (Can) Garneau-Club Chaussure was the top Canuck overall in 10th.

Tour de Beauce Final Report

Like all the major events on the international cycling calendar, the last stage is synonymous with celebration, and that tradition was continued at this 6th stage of the Tour de Beauce that covered the streets of Saint-Georges, the base of action for the teams this week.

Very often, the results have been established at the start, but in the parking lot of the Saint-Georges high school, everything could still be in question because of two Colombians, Darwin Atapuma and Sergio Luis Henao, both prominent since the first stage in Lac-Etchemin.

The 130-km race consisted of 12 loops of 10.8 km with a climb on each lap just before the finish line. In the first lap, three men broke away, already including one of the Colombians, but the attempt was not successful. Kelly Benefit, the team of American Scott Zwiwanski who was wearing the yellow jersey, watched the operations closely; each attempt to breakaway was pulled back. At the end of the 3rd lap, it was Darwin Atapuma (Café de Colombie) who won the points for the first KOM of the day, adding a few more polka-dots to the jersey he was already wearing.

The first true breakaway was attributed to three determined riders: Danilo Wyss (BMC Racing Team) winner of the first stage, Alex Howes (Felt Holowesko Partners Garmin U23) and Darren Lill (Team Type 1). This escape was made at the beginning of the 4th lap and remained intact until almost the end of the 5th, with Danilo Wyss winning the 1st sprint in front of Darren Lill and Alex Howes. Though Lill made a solo attempt to move ahead, everything rapidly returned to normal.

A move was made from back in the pack, when in the 8th lap a group of 9 riders moved ahead. Not a dangerous situation, but among the 9 were found the men in 2nd and 3rd place in the general classification. The Colombians caught up to the yellow jersey and went ahead by 30 seconds. This was trouble. The whole Kelly Benefit’s team tried to fold in the breakaway, and succeeded 3 laps from the finish.

Not much else needed to be done and the only interest remaining was to see who would win the stage. For two laps, group and individual attacks were tried but none succeeded. At the bell, there was only a small group able to be victorious. These few men watched each other closely up to 5 km from the finish line. However, just before the last left turn preceding the last climb, two riders, Bjorn Selander (Trek Livestrong) and Bernard Sulzberger (Fly V Australia) gambled and started the climb with a 10-second lead. They rode strongly up the hill together under the first light drops of rain of the day. At the final sprint, it was a new victory in 2 days for the Australians, a prominent team this time in the Beauce, with Bernard Sulzberger the victor.
