Canadian Sport News Report

David Veilleux of Cap-Rouge, Que., finished 20th in the men’s under-23 time trial on Tuesday to open the 2008 world road cycling championships.

Adriano Malori of Italy, the last rider to start, won the gold medal clocking the 33.5 kilometre race in 42 minutes and 35.989 seconds. Patrick Gretsch of Germany, crashed with three kilometres to go but still took the silver at 49.67 seconds back and Cameron Meyer of Australia was third 1:04.36 from the winning time.

Veilleux, 36th in the same event last year, clocked 43:44.70 and produced a particularly strong finish with the seventh fastest time on the last split.

The first racer of the day Veilleux said he was careful early on after some heavy rains in the morning made the course slippery. He was also coming off a recent ankle injury suffered at the Tour de Missouri earlier this month. Overall, the 20-year-old was pleased with his result particularly that his primary focus is the road race on Friday.

Eric Boily of Jonquiere, Que., who has been battling a stomach flu, was 39th more than three minutes off the winning time. There were 62 entries.

Competition continues Wednesday with the women’s elite time trial.
