2006 UCI Junior Track Worlds — Day 2

August 6, 2006 (Gent, Belgium) – Eric Smith (AB) set a new Canadian record at the Junior Track Worlds 3000m pursuit event today, while Monique Sullivan also from Calgary, AB, placed 11th in the 500m time trial Saturday and 9th in the 200m time trial today.

Day 2 — Session 3
Eric Smith (Calgary, AB) placed 13th in the UCI Junior Track Worlds 3000m pursuit qualification round today setting a new Canadian record with a time of 3:27:390.

The winner of the pursuit competition was Australia’s Cameron Meyer, with a time of 3:18.666, less than a second from the world record, followed by two riders from New-Zealand. Smith said he was very satisfied with his performance.

Monique Sullivan (Calgary, AB) qualified in 6th in the 200m time trial event, with an excellent time of 12:017. She was eliminated in the 1/8 finals by Australia’s Kaarle McCulloch and finally placed 9th saying she “gave it all what she could.”

Sullivan also finished 11th in Saturday night’s 500m time trial event (day 1 — session 2), with a time of 37.297. France’s Sandie Clair took the gold with a time of 35.223, and Ukrainian Lubov Shulyka earned the silver, with a time of 35.367.

“The times set by the Junior Women at the 500m time trial race are truly impressive,” said Vincent Jourdain, road and track coach for the Canadian National Team.

Sullivan had the third best time in the Junior- first year category. She said: “I couldn’t believe having my time beaten by all the girls one after another, the level is really high and I am satisfied with my first experience at the Worlds. ” She will also take part in the 200m sprint and keirin.

Lawrence Leroux (Oka, QC) finished 18th in the 1000m time trial event today. He was very disappointed, but he expects to do much better tomorrow at the 200m sprint competition.

Liège La Gleize (Belgium) Road Race – Québec’s Karol-Ann Canuel 11th

Karol-Ann Canuel (Amos, QC) placed 11th at the Liège La Gleize road race in Belgium, even after encountering major technical problems. It was a difficult race tough for Junior Men. Guillaume Boivin (Longueil, QC) was the only one to complete all three stages.
