2006 UCI Junior Road Worlds — CCA Report

August 13, 2006 (Spa Francorchamps, Belgium) — On the final day of the 2006 Junior Road Worlds, Karol-Ann Canuel (Amos, QC) placed 5th in the women’s 68 km road race with a time of 2:01:16.

Canuel was part of a group of 15 riders who made it for the final sprint. Lituania’s Rasa Leleivyte was able to take advantage at the end and take first place. She was followed by Italy’s Marina Romoli in second and Eleonora Patuzzo in third. Netherlands’ Linda Van Rijen placed fourth with Québec’s Karol-Ann Canuel finishing right behind her.

Danielle Kenny, of Calgary, AB, in a second group, finished 4:24 back in 55th place at the end of the five laps of the 13.6 km course.

“Karol-Ann is very satisfied with her race, even if she expected to be closer to the front at the end to make it to the podium,” said Vincent Jourdain, Canadian Cycling Association’s road and track coach.

In the Men’s race, Italy’s Diego Ulissi won the 122.4 km road race event, followed by Denmark’s Niki Ostergaard at 0:00:09 and France’s Tony Galopin who was third with the same time. Top Canadian was William Goodfellow (Laval, QC) who placed 102nd. Other Canadians, Mark Hinnen (ON), Alexander Korten (ON), Charlie Bryer (ON) and Guillaume Boivin (QC) did not finish.
