2006 Tour of Utah 2006 — Stage 5

August 12, 2006 — “Our plan today was to get Dom up the road and take back a minute, and that’s exactly what we did,” said Kodakgallery.com/Sierra Nevada General Manager Robin Zellner after this evening’s fifth stage of the Larry H. Miller Tour of Utah, a 37-mile circuit race in downtown Salt Lake City.

On the second of six laps, Kodakgallery.com/Sierra Nevada’s Dominique Perras broke away with seven other riders – Toyota-United’s Chris Baldwin, Jacob Erker (Symmetrics), Daniel Ramsey (Successfulliving.com), Nathan Miller (BMC Racing), Andy Bajadali (KJZZ Composite), Valeriy Kobzarenko (Navigators Insurance) and Michael Creed (TIAA-CREF).

Starting the day in 8th overall at 2’46” behind race leader Jeff Louder (Health Net-Maxxis), Perras was the highest placed rider in the breakaway, which both the Health Net-Maxxis and Navigators teams were content to let go.

After reaching a maximum lead of 1’30”, the break’s gap came back to 55″ at the finish, where Baldwin won the stage and Perras took 6th.

Having added another 6 seconds in time bonuses during the stage, the Kodakgallery.com/Sierra Nevada rider moved up to 6th place overall, leapfrogging Navigators’ Cesar Grajales and Sergey Lagutin.

“It took me a while to get going this season and I had some illness in May and June, but I feel great right now,” Perras said after the stage.

“I’m going to try to make something happen tomorrow and the stage is so selective, but I don’t think my effort tonight will hurt me since the stage was so short,” he added.

Kodakgallery.com/Sierra Nevada’s Jesse Anthony placed 14th in the stage and remains 16th overall.

The Larry H. Miller Tour of Utah concludes with tomorrow’s Snowbird Road Race, featuring 3 major climbs and over 12,000 feet of elevation gain in 85 miles.

A time zone away, Kodakgallery.com/Sierra Nevada team members will also be gunning for the $100,000 purse at the Alexian Brothers Tour of Elk Grove in Illinois.
