2006 MTB/Trials Worlds — Junior Men/Women’s Report

August 26, 2006 (Rotorua, New Zealand) – The hometown crowd was cheering loudly as New Zealand riders won gold and silver in the Junior Men’s DH finals. Cameron Cole of nearby Hamilton, was the sixth last rider out of the gate, and scored the gold medal with a smooth run down the course in clear but windy conditions.

Cole’s teammate, Sam Blenkinsop, took the silver despite having a much slower time than his seeding run. Antoine Badouard was close behind Blenkinsop to win the bronze medal for France.

Canada’s Steve Smith, who was third in the DH seeding runs, had a slower start on his final run and finished sixth overall.

Junior Women’s DH

Tracy Hannah (AUS) won the gold in the Junior Women’s DH final with the smoothest run in windy conditions and a time of 4:07. In second was Floriane Pugin of France who started well but had difficulties in the bottom section of the course. Canada’s Micayla Gatto also battled the windy conditions on the course and took third place, matching her performance at last year’s DH Worlds in Livigno, Italy.
