2005 Road Worlds – Elite Women\’s RR Report

September 24, 2005 – The experts were right – a bunch sprint greeted the elite women today after 126km of racing, with Germany’s Regina Schleicher taking the final gallop to the line.

After an injury-plagued season Great Britain’s Nicole Cooke managed to take the silver, with World Cup winner Oenone Wood (Australia) taking the bronze.

Although there were several attacks including some of the big names like Spain’s Joanne Somaribba, it was the strong German team that kept the race together for a bunch sprint. Defending champion Judith Arndt (Germany) was not up to the task – still sick from a virus – but luckily the Germans had an ace up their sleeve with Schleicher.

Two Canucks were in the lead group of 28 – Sue Palmer-Komar finished 14th and Erinne Willock placed 21st, with Alison Sydor in 31st, just off the back of the lead group after trying to set up her teammates for the sprint.
