2004 Track Nationals – Day 2

August 6, 2004 – The Canadian National Track Championships in Victoria, British Columbia got underway yesterday without any major glitches. Unfortunately today was different, Murphy’s law prevailed and today began with race delays due to rain. It never fails that an outdoor track race attracts nearby rain clouds. At 9:30 this morning John Errington of Victoria, the Greater Victoria Velodrome Committee planning secretary, pronounced that it wasn’t just raining but “pissing down” and the forecast didn’t look bright.

Despite the rain delay, Errington was pleased with how smoothly the day
before had operated. The only problem had occurred when Jimmy Oneschuk of
Saskatchewan rolled a tire in the first half lap of his kilometer
time-trial. He wasn’t able to control the bike and crashed. Luckily he
walked away unscathed.

The most exciting race so far of the competition has been the Senior Men’s
Sprint event. With all the times extremely close in the qualifying round
it promises to be a suspenseful round of match sprinting. Lori-Ann
Muenzer of Alberta also beat her qualifying time from last year at the
National Championships in Bromont, QC and her time this year would have
qualified her in 7th place in the Senior Men’s event. Muenzer told the
Times Columnist Newsapaer, “Just don’t call me grandma – I’m 38 but a fast
38.” Muenzer is Canada’s only track athlete going to Athens later this
month.

There is a lot more racing to come, stay tuned!
